Counter-height chairs (24–26" seat, paired with a 34–36" table) are generally the easiest option for older adults or anyone with knee or hip discomfort. The higher seat requires less bending to sit down or stand up than a dining chair, but it's not as tall or hard to climb into as bar-height seating. Selecting a chair with armrests adds extra support getting in and out. According to information at Outdoor Furniture Plus Counter Height Comfo Back Chairs:
"The seat height on counter height units lends itself to less effort when sitting in and getting out of them."
Why counter height hits the sweet spot for mobility:
- Less knee/hip bend required than dining height to sit or stand
- No climbing or stepping up required, unlike bar height
- Works well with armrests for push-up support (the Comfo-Back Counter Height Chair has a 31.5" arm height)
- Doesn't feel precarious or "perched" the way tall bar stools can for someone with balance concerns
