Dining, counter, and bar height chairs differ by seat height: roughly 17–19", 24–26", and 28–30" respectively and each is engineered to pair with a matching table height (28–30", 34–36", 40–42") so that about 10–12" of clearance remains between seat and tabletop. That fixed clearance is why you can't put a taller chair at an existing table and expect it to work: the pairing is a system, not independent choices.
