For families with small children, a picnic table with attached benches is usually the safest choice — kids can't tip the benches over. As children get older, detached benches win on flexibility. On material: polyresin is the easy-clean option (spills wipe up or wash off in the rain), while cedar and natural wood need spills attended to right away — a fair trade if you love the look of real wood and don't mind a little upkeep.
