Not necessarily. Cedar naturally resists decay and insects, so an unsealed table stays structurally sound for many years — it will just weather to a silver-gray. To preserve the original color, clean it and apply a quality exterior stain or sealant every few years. The most important habit: place your cedar picnic table where it can dry out between rains — feet and joints that stay wet are what rot prematurely (US Forest Service).
