Not always. Cedar as a tree naturally resists decay and insects, but giving it a bit of a clean and applying a quality exterior stain or sealant every few years helps preserve its color and protect it from weathering. Without maintenance, cedar will gradually fade to a natural silver-gray while remaining structurally sound for many years. The most important thing to remember is to place your cedar picnic table in an area that allows it to dry out between rains. Staying wet is not your table's friend. This can cause the feet or parts that stay wet to rot prematurely. (US Forest Service)
