Selecting a quality polyresin picnic table is your best bet as they last longer than cedar picnic tables based on the fact that they don't deteriorate by splintering, rotting, checking (small cracks that develop in natural wood) or require maintenance. Polyresin tables are made to handle the weather to include hail, rain, snow, sleet, sun damage and insects with minimal to do. A little soap and water cleans most dirt that accumulates over the wintertime if needed at all. Cedar does have natural resistance to insects and can also last a long time but regular maintenance is recommended. We recommend, especially in the early years, to clean and seal or stain your cedar table either every year or every other year to lengthen it's life. Overall considering life long goals, a poly table will fit the bill.
