On pure longevity, a quality polyresin picnic table outlasts cedar: HDPE doesn't splinter, rot, or check (the small cracks that develop in natural wood), and it shrugs off hail, rain, snow, sun, and insects with nothing more than occasional soap and water. Cedar has real natural resistance and can last a long time too, but it needs regular care — clean and seal or stain every year or two, especially in the early years, to maximize its life. If the goal is decades with minimal effort, poly fits the bill.
