Hi and thank you for your question. All Cedar is appropriate for use outdoors. The finish depends on your preference. We don't recommend varnishing or using any kind of impervious coating as you can rot your piece from the inside out. It needs to be able to dry out between times of being wet. If you want warm tones and a finish, we recommend using an oil or water based sealer and/or stain. Higher end brands like Behr are preferable over the low end box store brands.
